A lot of mobile strategy games are surprisingly heavy, and it shows on older phones with stutter and battery drain. But a few developers really optimize, and Iron Tide Command is a good example — dozens of units and it never chugged on my three-year-old handset.

The trick usually comes down to smart art direction. Clean, flat visuals read better on small screens anyway, and they ask far less of the hardware. Fancy lighting rarely makes a tactics game more fun.

If you're shopping for something to play on a long trip, check whether a game offers an offline mode. Nothing kills a strategy session like a dropped connection mid-battle.

Look for titles that let you pause and think. Real-time pressure is exciting, but the ability to breathe is what keeps me coming back.
